Norfolk sites waste no time

The Norfolk Strategic Partnership (NSP) is helping Norfolk County Council achieve cost savings of 1.5% - simply by treating waste as an opportunity rather than a burden.

NSP was formed in 2004 and comprises Norfolk County Council, May Gurney (as contractor) and Mott Macdonald (consultant). May Gurney's day-to-day involvement centres on routine road maintenance and surfacing and delivery of schemes worth more than £100,000.

Norfolk has successfully pioneered its new waste management strategy on highways projects, where it is achieving savings between £200,000 and £300,000 per year.

Mark Sexton, Project Manager for Norfolk's waste management plan, says: "We generate well in excess of 80,000 tonnes of waste from highways works each year, virtually all of which has the potential to be reused or recycled - but until recently 40-45,000 tonnes went to landfill."

Next spring it will become mandatory for every UK construction project valued at £250,000 or more to produce a site waste management plan. These plans are voluntary at present.
