MD participates in government highways debate

Peter Batts, Managing Director of May Gurney Highway Services, recently participated in a high-profile debate about future government investment in highways.

With more than 37 years experience in the highways industry behind him, Peter was invited to participate in a panel session at the Civils 2005 Transport & Infrastructure Conference in November 2005.

"Discussions focused on whether the government should continue to increase highway capacity, or whether it should make better use of the existing highway infrastructure," Peter explains. "The general view was that we need to do both if traffic is to be kept moving.

"However, for sustainability and environmental reasons, greater focus needs to be placed on minimising vehicle journeys by encouraging alternative modes of travel.

"There was also discussion about achieving more reliable journey times. To this end, the Highways Agency has established a KPI on journey time reliability, which focuses on reducing delays due to accidents," Peter concluded.

The panel session formed part of Strategy & Funding for Britain's Highways, which took place on Wednesday 23 November.
