New contract win will improve recycling in Barnet

Our Environmental Services team will be working with Barnet Council to achieve ambitious waste recycling targets, under a new five-year partnership contract which goes live this month (October 2008).

Service improvements to be put in place under the contract include adding plastic bottles and cardboard to the doorstep recycling collection service. These items will be added to the paper, glass, tins and cans, aluminum foil, shoes, mobile phones, textiles, engine oil and batteries which we currently collect, separate at the kerbside and then send for reprocessing and recycling.

The introduction of these new materials will further boost recycling to keep the council on track to hit its target of 40% of waste being recycled by 2010 and 45% by 2014.

Andy Bond (left), Environmental Services' development director, said: "We are delighted to be extending our partnership with Barnet and look forward to working with them over the next five years.

"Barnet residents can be confident that 99.95% of what they put out on the doorstep ends up being recycled. And the majority of materials will continue to be recycled in the UK, reducing carbon emissions."

As well as adding new materials to the doorstep service, there will be a new recycling container for residents to add to their black boxes or communal flats recycling facilities.

The new contract will also see the creation of a 'baling' facility at the Mill Hill Depot for cans, plastic bottles and cardboard, which will make it easier to transport the material in bulk.
