Awards round up
May Gurney's remarkable run of awards success continued right though November. During the month the company added a further four wins and a commendation to its bulging trophy cabinet. Here's a round up of these most recent successes.
Jayne Newey, Marketing Support at May Gurney Utility Services, receives the Green Apple Award from David Bellamy OBE.
Green Apple Awards - win
Following its success last year, May Gurney was once again successful at the 2007 Green Apple Awards, which recognise and reward environmental best practice around the world.
"It is important that we set the highest environmental standards"

The awards were presented by David Bellamy OBE, the well-known author, broadcaster and environmental campaigner, at the House of Commons in London on 9 November.
May Gurney was presented with a silver award in the Building and Construction category for its forward thinking and consideration of environmental issues during the design and construction of 9km of ductile iron pipeline connecting water treatment works at Pynnes and Tottiford, and the surrounding supply areas.
Gavin Scarr Hall, Utility Services Managing Director, said: "It is excellent for our Utility Services team to collect another prestigious Green Apple Award again this year. It's important that we set the highest environmental standards - and this is reflected in the work we do with our customers, both in delivery and the support we can give during the planning phase of the works."
The award-winning project was commended for tackling numerous location and transportation challenges in order to minimise the environmental impact of the work undertaken. The route was designed to avoid the more established woodland and plantation areas to protect wildlife and, where possible, stream crossings were kept to a minimum.
The potentially significant environmental costs associated with removing all excavated material from site were avoided by converting the material into pipeline bedding. A new rotating filter bucket was sourced, which allowed the team to re-use more than 95% of the excavated material. The riddling bucket also avoided the need for imported material to be transported to site for 3000 metres of pipeline bedding.
The Green Organisation teamed up with Tree Appeal to carbon neutralise each award winner's journey to the event by planting a tree on their behalf.
Historic Bridge & Infrastructure Awards - win
In partnership with Mott Macdonald, May Gurney was awarded the Historic Bridge & Infrastructure Award, whose sponsors include the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Network Rail, British Waterways, English Heritage and the County Surveyors' Society.
The award was made for cast iron fatigue testing carried out as part of an extensive refurbishment of the High Level Bridge (HLB) in Newcastle, which was built by Robert Stephenson and opened in 1849. May Gurney has been main contractor on the project for the past eight years, which will be complete early in 2008.
The testing was carried out in conjunction with the University of Manchester to gain an understanding of the level of fatigue and stressing within the bridge's cast iron cross girders.
The judges said the project 'demonstrates that cutting-edge research can pay dividends - an extremely cost effective solution involving a very high profile structure'.
The awards ceremony was held on 21 November at the ICE offices at One Great George Street, London. May Gurney was represented by John Wilkinson, Head of Operations Engineering & Project Services and Peter Stubbs, HLB Construction Manager.

CECA Awards - win
We reported last month that Trainee Kirk Carman has been awarded the prestigious Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Award for the Most Promising Apprentice.
This was Kirk's third award win in as many months - earlier this year he won two of the prestigious National Construction College Awards, including the top award Apprentice of the Year.
The CECA Awards judges were impressed that Kirk is involved in May Gurney's recruitment and induction programmes. They described him as 'a significant example of what the industry needs in the future, and he has tremendous potential to progress within May Gurney'.
Kirk was presented with a cup, certificate and a cheque for £500 at the CECA Annual Dinner in London on 7 November.
Kirk received his award from Adrian Dyball, CECA (Southern) chairman.
ASLEC Industry Awards - win
Cartledge employee Phil Lucraft achieved first place in 'Operative of the Year' category at the ASLEC (Association of Street Lighting & Electrical Contractors) Industry Awards, which were presented at the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport in Wales on 1 November.
"We are all very proud of Phil"
Graham Cartledge |
Cartledge is May Gurney's specialist street lighting business and Phil was nominated for the commitment and pride he has shown working on the company's contracts within the East London Depot.
"There are 241 ASLEC-registered organisations and 4,243 individuals carrying registration cards," says Graham Cartledge, Managing Director. "Just reaching the final three was a fantastic achievement, but for Phil to win shows the top quality of our operatives - especially as this is the second consecutive year that an operative from our East London Depot has reached the finals. We are all extremely proud of Phil and congratulate him."
Phil has worked at Cartledge for more than 13 years carrying out all aspects of street lighting maintenance and installation work.

Ifs ProShare Awards - commendation
May Gurney's Share Save scheme, which was successfully launched earlier this year, received a commendation award at the 2007 ifs ProShare Awards, which recognise best practice and innovation in design, communication and delivery of employee share plans.
"...making employees feel valued and recognizing their dedication"

After 19 road shows in nine locations across the country, the company received such an overwhelming response from employees to Share Save that it has had to scale back the amount that an individual can set aside.
Share Save won a commendation in the 'Best New Share Plan' category. The judges commented on May Gurney's 'enthusiastic approach to launching Share Save' and the 'uncomplicated plan with a clear rationale of making employees feel valued and recognising their dedication, while instilling a sense of belonging and commitment to the company'.
The Awards were presented at The New Connaught Rooms, London on 20 November by ITV weather girl Andrea McLean and Matt Dawson, England Rugby World Cup winner.
The ifs ProShare Award was collected by May Gurney's Sarah Hurn and Allyson Ablett (third and fourth left respectively)

Graham Cartledge has served on the ASLEC council for seven years, and was previously Chairman in 2002. He said: "I have agreed to stand as Chairman for a second time because the association will be going through lots of major changes this year."
