Companies unite for WaterAid

Representatives from May Gurney and South West Water came together on 15 September to raise money for WaterAid as part of the 2007 Coast Along event.

Chris Loughlin, Chief Executive of South West Water and Ian Findlater, Group Business Development Director of May Gurney, led the team that walked from Budleigh Salterton to Sidmouth. The event organises teams to walk each of the 70 sections of the South West Coast Path on the same day.

May Gurney was the principal sponsor of the event, and more than 50 of the company's employees covered 75 miles to raise almost £5,000 for WaterAid.

Ian Findlater, said: "It was a fantastic day and the weather was perfect. The whole company has been behind the 10 May Gurney teams. As an example, a recent business improvement day for 60 managers generated more than £1,500 in sponsorship through a range of ingenious fund-raising tasks."

Vanessa Ashton, event co-ordinator, said: "We are hoping to smash the sum of £50,000 raised by last year's Coast Along. It costs just £15 for WaterAid to provide someone with the essentials of life - clean water, somewhere safe to go to the toilet, and an understanding of the importance of hygiene - so if the target of £60,000 is reached, we will have raised enough to help 4,000 of the world's poorest people."

WaterAid works in 17 countries throughout Africa, Asia and the Pacific Region, helping to provide some of the world's poorest communities with clean water, safe sanitation and hygiene education.

Footnote: May Gurney gave further support for WaterAid by teaming up with Wessex Water and Bristol Water to sponsor a race at their annual WaterAid sponsorship Race Night. The event was held on 5 October at the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum, Bristol and raised a fantastic £71,000.

Andy Pymer of the race night committee said: "We were delighted to have May Gurney's support for the evening - you were main sponsors for WaterAid's CoastAlong so we really did appreciate your partnership at the Bristol event as well."
