Bumper awards haul

It's been a fantastic few weeks for May Gurney on the awards front with no fewer than FIVE wins and another short listing. Here's a quick-fire round up...

Team members from the Environment Agency, Faber Maunsell and May Gurney were thrilled to win the BCI Best Practice Award

BCI Award - win
The River Witham Flood Defence Scheme won the Best Practice Award at the prestigious BCI Awards, which were presented on 10 October at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London's Park Lane.

The BCI Awards are regarded as the construction industry's 'Oscars'. They are the most rigorously judged awards with all short listed projects visited by members of the judging panel.

"The project demonstrated a great measure of lateral thinking"

Short listed projects in all categories were eligible for the Best Practice Award, which is for 'projects which involved processes adopted to understand and meet client needs, supported team working throughout and maintained continuous improvement'.

With regard to the River Witham project, judges said 'the use of more than one million recycled car tyres to create bales was impressive - with a strong chance of take up on other projects', and that 'the project demonstrated a great measure of lateral thinking - in funding, organisation and technology'.

Under the scheme, improvements have been carried out to 30km of the River Witham bank, across 50 separate sites. An integrated team comprising the Environment Agency (customer), Faber Maunsell (consultant) and May Gurney as contractor worked together closely and successfully to deliver the project.

National Training Awards - win
May Gurney has won the highest accolade in the world of training, a National Training Award. May Gurney and TIPS for Good Management Ltd was the only partnership entry to be awarded a National Training Award at the East of England event in Cambridge.

"Inspiring, innovative and exciting"

Colin Jackson - awards host

The awards are run by UK Skills on behalf of the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills, and recognise 'exceptional achievement through training and development'.

The TIPS for Good Management programme, which May Gurney has been operating for five years, aims to improve the company's effectiveness and competitiveness while reducing costs.

Achievements include introducing time management techniques to free up time to win new business worth £600,000, and reducing the cost of concrete waste from driven piles by £250,000 by improving process techniques. The total business benefits have been identified as worth £1.7m to date.

The programme has been developed and managed by Rosanne Goose, Learning & Development Manager at May Gurney and Julian Hammond of training provider TIPS for Good Management Ltd.

Rosanne Goose said: "This award is a real endorsement of the hard work everyone involved has put in and the successes of the delegates. It means a great deal to the company to be recognised for its commitment to training."

Former 110m hurdles world champion Colin Jackson hosted the regional ceremony in Cambridge. He described TIPS for Good Management as 'inspiring, innovative and exciting'. The National Training Awards will be presented at a ceremony in London on 13 December.

Jason Brook won the Construction Graduate of the Year Award

East of England Construction Training Awards - two wins and a highly commended
May Gurney enjoyed double success at the East Of England Construction Training awards ceremony, which was hosted by Sir Ranulph Feinnes, Britain's most famous explorer, at the SAS Radisson, Stansted.

The company's MAD programme picked up the Construction Health & Safety Best Practice Award, which was accepted by Chris Heath and Tina Dobson on behalf of the BISHE team.

The second award, Construction Graduate of the Year, was presented to Jason Brooks.

May Gurney was also highly commended for the 'Business Education Link in Construction Award'.

CECA Awards - win

Kirk Carmen has added the CECA Apprentice award to his two National Construction College awards

May Gurney trainee Kirk Carmen has been awarded the prestigious Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Award for the Most Promising Apprentice.

This is Kirk's third award win in as many months - earlier this year he won two of the prestigious National Construction College Awards, including the top award Apprentice of the Year.

General Construction Apprentice Kirk - who was based at the National Construction College in Bircham Newton, Norfolk - has now joined the Norfolk Strategic Partnership and is working on the InteGreat project, which is transforming Great Yarmouth's Golden Mile.

Kirk will be presented with a cup, certificate and cheque for £500 at the CECA (Southern) Annual Dinner held in London on 7 November.

Ifs Proshare Awards - short listing
May Gurney's Share Save scheme, which was successfully launched earlier this year, has been short listed for the ifs ProShare Awards.

The ifs ProShare Annual Awards recognise best practice and innovation in design, communication and delivery by companies of employee share plans and other employee share ownership arrangements.

The Awards set a benchmark of corporate excellence and present a perfect opportunity for companies to celebrate and gain recognition for their achievements.

After 19 road shows in nine locations across the country, Share Save received such an overwhelming response from employees who wanted to join the scheme that the company had to scale back the amount that an individual could set aside.

As a result of its success, Share Save has been short listed in two categories - 'Best New Share Plan' and 'Most Effective Communication of an Employee Share Plan'.

Fiona Downes, Head of Employee Share Ownership at ifs ProShare, said: "A record number of entries combined with a rigorous judging process mean that those who have been short listed, and especially those that win one of the award categories, can take pride in having truly excelled in the industry."

The Awards will be presented at The New Connaught Rooms, London on 20 November. ITV weather girl and presenter Andrea McLean will host the ceremony, and the guest speaker will be Matt Dawson, England Rugby World Cup winner.
