Council pilots MAD

The success of May Gurney's MAD (Making a Difference) behavioural change programme has prompted Norfolk County Council's Planning & Transportation Department to adopt the programme for its own use.

MAD was developed in-house and is credited with virtually halving May Gurney's AFR (Accident Frequency Rate) during 2006 - from 0.43 at the outset to 0.24 at the close of the year. Progress has continued in 2007, and the AFR has fallen to below 0.2 for the first time in the company's history.

Rowan Watson, from May Gurney's BISHE team, has been seconded part time to Norfolk CC for six months to help set up a pilot for 400 employees, and to train the Council's own MAD coaches.

" MAD seeks to make a lasting, permanent impact "

Toby Pyper - Aggregate Industries

A number of May Gurney's supply chain partners and customers have taken an active interest in MAD. Having seen the programme working first hand, several have adopted it to deliver behavioural change.

Aggregate Industries' Southern Area Director, Toby Pyper, said: "What impressed me was MAD's ability to make a real connection with employees and a positive impact on changing their behaviours. MAD isn't just 'another initiative' but seeks to make a lasting, permanent impact on approaches to safety."

SITA UK has adopted MAD across all its operations. "The programme is simple, direct, and addresses the vital behavioural issues that underlie most accidents," says Chris Gibson, Group Health & Safety Manager.

And representatives from UEA Estates and Yorkshire Waste Management, who attended a recent MAD coaching course, are also considering the programme for their organisations.

MAD has also won a string of awards. In June 2007, it beat off stiff competition to scoop the IHT/Highways Agency Health & Safety at Work Award. The IHT Awards celebrate and promote professionalism and best practice to a wide industry audience.
