Double awards success for 'class act'

May Gurney's birthday celebrations got off to the best possible start when the company was named EDP Barclays Business of the Year 2006 on the eve of the company's 80th anniversary.

May Gurney took the top prize at the end of a glittering night watched by more than 300 leading figures from the world of business - having already scooped the business development award earlier in the evening.

It was also the first occasion that a company has won the EDP Barclays Business of the Year award for a second time - May Gurney also claimed the top honour in 2003.

The black-tie awards event, which was held at the Holiday Inn Norwich Airport on Friday 6 October, is one of the highlights of East Anglia's social calendar.

It was the 17th year of the awards, which recognise the best companies and organisations in East Anglia.

Judges praised the way May Gurney had transformed itself from a traditional contractor to a business which works closely on long- term relationships with its customers, saying: "This company is a class act. It has embarked on a successful growth strategy, both organically and through careful acquisitions."
