Safety MAD

As a result of its Making A Difference (MAD) behavioural safety campaign, the number of reportable accidents in May Gurney has reduced by a remarkable 65%.

Three of the last six months have been without a reportable accident (RIDDOR), and four million RIDDOR-free man hours have been clocked up. This makes May Gurney one of the safest places to work in the industry.

The MAD programme is based on all employees making the right choices - consciously and subconsciously - supported by a culture that asks all to 'lead by example' and 'walkover'.

May Gurney's Director of Business Improvement, Safety, Health and Environment, Chris Heath, said: "When you have results like these you have to give credit to the teams that have worked very hard to achieve them. This is a brilliant result for the company, and shows that health and safety is firmly entrenched in the way May Gurney does business."

May Gurney is currently rolling out the second module of the programme to further enhance the understanding of MAD. The initial module was so well received that several clients have asked to be included in the behavioural safety programme. Subsequently May Gurney arranged for its staff to assist in launching these customers' own programmes.

One of May Gurney's key clients, Network Rail, was introduced to the concept by May Gurney's Rail Services' team. Network Rail visited several other May Gurney sites to see MAD in action and is now piloting the MAD programme.

To support Network Rail's MAD scheme, May Gurney MAD champion Emma Barratt (pictured above), is working with Network Rail as project manager for the pilot programme. The pilot involves the whole of Network Rail's Civils Asset section and its supply chain.

MAD is also on the agenda of Network Rail's Infrastructure Safety Liaison Group and is being considered for use elsewhere in the organisation and by other major contractors in the supply chain.
