Awards roundup

May Gurney's work in Chester for National Grid has won one prestigious industry award and made the shortlist for another.

May Gurney is working with National Grid to make Chester one of the first cities in the UK with an 'all plastic' network of medium pressure gas mains. One of the major challenges was to replace a length of main that runs across the historic Victorian Grosvenor Bridge across the River Dee.

May Gurney's innovative 'trenchless' solution to this challenge won the Small New Installation Project category at the UK Society of Trenchless Technology (UKSTT) Awards on 27 April in Birmingham (see pic above).

The project was also short listed is for the Customer Service category in the Gas Awards 2007.

May Gurney has also made the short list for the recently launched FT and Investors Chronicle AIM Investment Awards. May Gurney is in the running for the Float of the Year Award, which was voted for by a panel of fund managers assembled by the FT Group.

The awards will be presented at a black tie dinner for 600 guests at the London Marriott Hotel on 14 June.

May Gurney's MAD (Making a Difference) behavioural change programme has made the short list for the IHT/Highways Agency Health & Safety at Work Award.

MAD was developed in-house and is credited with virtually halving May Gurney's AFR (Accident Frequency Rate) during 2006 - from 0.43 at the outset to 0.24 at the close of the year. Progress has continued in 2007, and the AFR has fallen to below 0.2 for the first time in the company's history.

The Award will be presented at the IHT Awards Dinner at the National Maritime Museum in London on 7 June.

Finally, May Gurney was also short listed in two categories of the Water Industry Achievement Awards.
