Students benefit from engineering project

May Gurney has helped two teams of Year 12 students from City of Norwich School and the Hewett School to complete their first engineering projects under the Engineering Education Scheme (EESE).

The students were given a 'real' engineering problem to solve by May Gurney. Their task was to design, develop, manufacture and test a product that could extract and filter contaminated water from an excavation site.

The scheme produces a number of benefits, as the students collectively explained:

"As students on the EESE we have been given the opportunity to work in industry on a project from concept to implementation. We were able to see at first hand how the industry works and how all the different areas of civil engineering operate together.

"This rare experience has helped us decide on our careers.

"In addition to gaining invaluable engineering knowledge, we have also improved our interviewing techniques, which will help us when we start visiting universities next year. We have also learned the benefits of working in a team, particularly learning to rely on each other.

At the 'celebration and assessment day' after the project, the students had to discuss their work with four examiners as well as members of the public. Although this was quite daunting at first, team members said their confidence grew as the project developed.
