Making A Difference - to the environment

The MAD principles that have played a major part in spectacularly reducing May Gurney's accident rate by around 50% are now being deployed to help the company achieve its environmental objectives.

MAD (Making A Difference) helps people do the right things by taking three simple actions - do it themselves (Lead by example), help others (Walk over) and thinking prior to acting (Take 10).

The new MAD Environment briefing acts as a reminder of how the brain works in terms of choices (consciously, unconsciously and habitually) and goes on to tackle three areas of May Gurney's environmental performance.

Chris Heath, Director of BISHE, says: "If we can eliminate pollution incidents and any adverse effects on ecology, and minimise waste, this would be a wonderful contribution to society. People choosing to take the right action will also ensure compliance with the law and save money, as well as helping the environment.

"The message is simple - it's our environment, where we work and where our families live - let's all make a difference."

In true MAD style, the new module is very simple - it certainly does not involve lots of technical data or information about environmental law. Rather it creates opportunities for employees to become more aware of the environmental impact of the choices they make, both at work and at home.

MAD Environment rollout is underway across the business and all employees are expected to have received a briefing by the end of April.
