Innovative event for teenagers
The third May Gurney Challenge - the latest in a series of events to engage
students in practical engineering tasks - took place at the University of
Brighton on 7 February.
57 teenagers from five schools were given a fictitious brief to come up with
solutions to transport radioactive waste across an environmentally sensitive
area.
Scale models were designed, built and then put to the test in a series of
head-to-head races across an obstacle course that replicated an inhospitable
landscape.
Neil Oxenbury, May Gurney's Contracts Manager on the East Sussex Highways
partnership, said: "There is a lack of awareness among young people about
career opportunities in construction and engineering. The May Gurney
Challenge a fun and informal way to engage young people and raise awareness
of the diverse career opportunities available in the sector."
10 May Gurney and East Sussex County Council managers were on hand to act as
'expert' consultants on various aspects of construction and engineering.
The students 'bought' time with the experts to obtain help and advice
throughout the day. At the end of the day the teams presented their
solutions to the panel members, who marked them on team working ability, the
design and originality of the model, and marketing and presentation skills.
The winning team, from Sackville School, was presented with a £500 cheque by
the Mayor of the City of Brighton & Hove, Bob Carden, and East Sussex County
Council's Director of Transport and Environment, Bob Wilkins, to put towards
engineering equipment for their school. Each team member also received an
individual tool kit.
The event was organized in collaboration with SETPOINT Sussex, part of the
national Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics Network (SETNET).
Bronagh Liddicoat, director of SETPOINT Sussex, said: "The level of
enthusiasm and commitment the students demonstrated at the Sussex event has
definitely filled us with a positive outlook for the future."
