May Gurney scoops FOURTH Green Apple Award

May Gurney has picked up a remarkable FOURTH Green Apple 2010 Award, this time for a scheme carried out as part of the Norfolk Strategic Partnership*.

The Green Apple Awards, which recognise and reward environmental best practice around the world, were established in 1994. It was one of the first award schemes to be accepted as an accredited feeder scheme into the European Business Awards for the Environment (EBAE). Green Apple winners are automatically considered to represent their country in the Brussels-led EBAEs.

The latest win, for the NORA (Nar Ouse Regeneration Area) Utilities Project in Kings Lynn, was in the Green Apple Best Practice category. The work was carried out by the Norfolk Strategic Partnership on behalf of the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk.

The project’s overarching aim was to regenerate a brownfield site which had previously been occupied by polluting heavy industries. It has breathed new life into the site which was ravaged by contamination, paving the way for much needed residential housing, commercial and retail development, and completion of a recreational park. The scheme was part of the Borough Council’s long-term vision for a brighter future for this disadvantaged area of West Norfolk.

Of the 8,915m3 of materials excavated during the course of works, 4,150m3 has been reused on site. The project was completed within budget, on time and with a clean health, safety and environmental record.

May Gurney’s other 2010 Green Apple Awards are for:

• The on-going May Gurney Carbon Reduction Programme, which has achieved an 18% reduction in the company’s carbon footprint since April 2009.

• The Avon Water Treatment Works project, carried out on behalf of South West Water, which involved installation of a 13km pipeline through woodland, parkland and agricultural land in rural South Devon.

• Gully dewatering bays developed by MGWSP, which carries out roadside gully cleansing for the whole of Northamptonshire. The new dewatering facilities remove the liquid from the waste, leaving behind solid organic waste.

The Green Apple Awards are organised by The Green Organisation, an independent, non-political, non-activist, non-profit environment group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world.

The Green Apple Awards will be formally presented at the House of Commons in November. May Gurney will also once again be invited to join the International Green Heroes, an elite group of environmental achievers who use their experience to help thousands of others - and the environment - around the world. Green Hero status was first bestowed on May Gurney in 2009.

*Footnote: The Norfolk Strategic Partnership comprises Norfolk County Council, May Gurney and Mott MacDonald. The partnership is responsible for maintenance and repairs to almost 10,000 kms of highways and footways including surface dressing; patching; gully emptying; weed spraying; verge maintenance; major surfacing; minor highways improvement schemes; and new major highway, bridge, and public transport infrastructure schemes.
