Major road improvement programme nears completion

Working as part of the West Sussex Alliance, May Gurney is nearing completion of a major programme of surfacing works to improve roads for West Sussex residents.

While carriageway repairs are carried out every year, £8.4m has been added to the 2010 programme to seal in new repairs and protect against future winter weather damage.

The total area resurfaced since 1 April is a staggering 1,769,765.50m², which equates to around 272km of road. The types of surfacing used to tackle the winter damage included surfacing dressing, micro surfacing, patching, and carriageway re-surfacing.

Richard Collins MBE, general manager for May Gurney in West Sussex, said: “This has been a huge undertaking but close working and clear communication between alliance partners has ensured timely completion and a successful outcome.”

A task force - comprising May Gurney, West Sussex County Council and supply chain partners including Ringway, Hazel & Jefferies, and Bardon Contracting - was formed to coordinate the 2010 programme.

The challenge was to co-ordinate the works and ensure the programme flowed smoothly from one project to the next, maximising the use of plant and personnel. Just over four months on, the project is nearing completion.
