New school provides modern learning environment for staff and pupils

May Gurney has completed a project to create a modern new learning environment for staff, pupils and the local community at Pitsea in Essex.

The £5.2m Essex County Council project, to rebuild Felmore Primary School and refurbish the adjoining Infants’ School, has been carried out by May Gurney working as a SMARTE EAST* partner.

The scheme includes a new two-storey extension and refurbishment of the existing Infants’ School buildings, construction of the new Junior School, demolition of the old buildings, re-modelling the car park and play areas, landscaping and creating a wildlife garden.

The project was identified by Essex County Council as a key scheme to get ‘on the ground’ - and the children into the new teaching and learning space - at the earliest opportunity.

Early involvement by May Gurney as contractor enabled relationships with the client and professional team to develop through each stage of design and planning. Stakeholder workshops and supply chain partnering demonstrated commitment to the scheme and speeded up the process of starting work on site and procuring subcontractors.

The end result is a scheme delivered on time and to a high quality, providing the right learning environment for teachers and pupils alike.

*Footnote: SMARTE EAST is a not for profit company jointly owned by Essex, Hertfordshire and Suffolk County Councils, which acts as an umbrella for regional framework contracts. It is the result of a ground breaking initiative by the authorities in collaboration with the Association of Chief Corporate Property Officers (COPROP) and the Regional Centre of Excellence East (RCE-East) who provided funding and ongoing support for the project.
