Willowbrook school will provide improved learning environment

The much anticipated rebuild of a Primary School in Brentwood, Essex will create a modern learning environment including a community hall, pre-school area and an eco-friendly living roof.

Working on behalf of Essex County Council, May Gurney has started work on the £5.5m rebuild of Hutton Willowbrook Primary School, which will be completed in November 2011.

The new build will provide a modern learning environment for 210 pupils with seven new classrooms, kitchen, school hall, library, staff room and administration facilities. The wider community will also benefit from the new community hall and pre-school area.

The building has been designed to be as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible. It will have a living, soil roof that will grow grass and other small plants over time. The water that runs off the roof will be collected by a specialised irrigation system and used for the school toilets.

The building project has also been reviewed by BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method), a leading environmental assessment method for buildings that helps reduce the environmental impact of buildings.

Dave Horkan, head of operations at May Gurney, says: “May Gurney is delighted to be constructing this school. It will offer pupils and other members of the community an attractive, modern and environmentally friendly building that will no doubt become a real hub of the community in Brentwood.”

Councillor Derrick Louis, Essex County Council cabinet member for major projects & commercial services, said that the rebuild will create a superb new learning environment for students and teachers.
