EA flood alleviation scheme recognised with ICE Award

Working as part of Team Van Oord*, May Gurney has won an ICE East of England Merit Award for a flood alleviation scheme at St Neots in Huntingdonshire, carried out on behalf of the Environment Agency.

In the ICE Awards, projects are ‘commended’, ‘highly commended’ or deemed to be of ‘exceptional merit’, which is what the St Neots scheme achieved.

Deborah Nutt, project manager and associate at EC Harris LLP, said: “This project has been a team effort from all on site. The quality of the finished product is some of the highest I have seen on EA projects and this is due to the fact that people take pride and care in their work.”

In November 2009, local residents celebrated the completion of the scheme at Riverside Park in St Neots. The occasion was marked by a tree planting ceremony and local children from Aylesbury School also attended to see the completed scheme. The year six pupils had visited the scheme earlier and made their own model of it.

The £1.6m Environment Agency scheme, which consists of a flood embankment and a raised section of a road, manages flood risk for 115 properties.

Mrs Gallagher, a local resident, said: “I am very pleased with the scheme and the work the Environment Agency has done to manage flood risk in the area.”
