Communication 'key to success' on Environment Agency project

An Environment Agency officer has praised the ‘communication and co-operation’ of the team that has designed and built a new pumping station on the banks of the river Thames.

Working as part of Team Van Oord*, May Gurney has been responsible for the M&E (mechanical & electrical) installation and manufacture of the control panel.

The Green Level pumping station takes land drainage water from dykes and ditches in and around Erith Marshes on the south bank of the river Thames. The land is below the Thames tidal level and the pumps lift the water into the river.

Construction began in June 2009 and the scheme is currently being commissioned and scheduled for completion this month.

Peter Tinker, Environment Agency MEICA lead electrical officer, said: “On projects that involve two or more contractors, often each contractor works as a separate entity and this leads to poor communication.

“Despite my often unplanned site visits I was always welcomed and not seen as an interference, which led to greater communication and co-operation between myself and Team Van Oord/May Gurney.

“Communication between all parties has been the key to success throughout this project. It has led to a very well built control panel and a thorough and well-managed commissioning period.

“It has been my pleasure to work with you and I would not hesitate to recommend Team Van Oord/May Gurney for future Environment Agency projects.”
