Bridgend prepares to lead the way in Wales

A new fleet of 20 specially designed recycling trucks and the introduction of new collection services will see Bridgend County Borough Council leading the way with regard to waste and recycling in Wales.

Promotional work has been stepped up in Bridgend in advance of the launch of the overhauled kerbside recycling service, to be delivered by May Gurney.

May Gurney and Bridgend County Borough Council are working in partnership to make residents aware of the planned change to the service, which will see plastics, cans, cardboard and food waste collected at the kerbside for the first time from June 2010.

The partners are issuing the 60,000 residents with a letter, an eight-page booklet and a leaflet of frequently asked questions about the new service.

Councillor John Spanswick, cabinet member for communities, said: "We know that there will need to be adjustments to the way that people put out their waste and recycling from the middle of June, but the benefits to the environment will be fantastic, with much less going to landfill and much more being recycled so it can be reused for other materials."

Rhona Coulter, regional development director at May Gurney, added: "We're very excited to be part of this area's recycling revolution. Above all, we're keen to make it easy for residents to recycle more and for the council to extract more value from the materials we collect.

"This is why we're introducing a new fleet of 20 specially designed recycling trucks to streamline collections, and re-vamping the existing transfer station to make the processing of materials more efficient.

“These innovations, together with introduction of new collection services, mean that Bridgend will really be leading the way in Wales."

The council appointed May Gurney as its waste management contractor in December 2009 under a seven-year deal.

The contract, which is estimated to be worth around £75m and saw May Gurney take over from previous contractor Biffa on 1 April, includes waste and recycling collections, operation of the waste management and transfer station and running the council's four civic amenity sites.
