Public and environment will benefit from Park & Ride facility

A new Park & Ride facility to be built by May Gurney will make it easier for local people to get in and out of Chelmsford via sustainable transport.

The £2.8m contract, awarded by Essex County Council, takes the value of work awarded to May Gurney under the SmartEast scheme to around £35m.

The project will see the two-hectare site transformed into a Park & Ride facility by the end of 2010, and open to the public by April 2011.

The facility, to the north of Chelmsford, will provide a modern terminus building and 700 car spaces and has been designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘very good’ target.

BREEAM is the environmental assessment system for buildings around the world. The combination of the BREEAM rating and an on-site wind turbine will result in the scheme achieving a carbon negative A+ energy rating.

SmartEast is a not for profit company jointly owned by Essex, Hertfordshire and Suffolk County Councils. As a framework partner May Gurney is delivering a range of public sector new-build and refurbishment projects.

SmartEast acts as an umbrella for regional framework contracts and the training and development of an extended supply chain, with the emphasis on establishing long-term relationships.

Working under SmartEast, May Gurney has been awarded contracts worth around £35m in the past two years.
