Kerbside recycling goes countywide in Somerset

Working as part of the Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP), May Gurney is to bring kerbside recycling services to all households in Somerset.

May Gurney has a long-term recycling and waste services contract with the SWP which comprises Somerset County Council, Sedgemoor, South Somerset, Mendip and West Somerset District Councils, and Taunton Deane Borough Council. On behalf of the SWP, May Gurney provides waste collection, recycling and disposal services for 235,000 homes.

‘SORT IT PLUS’ adds plastic bottle and cardboard collections to the SORT IT service already operating in Taunton Deane, Mendip and South Somerset. It is being rolled out in Taunton Deane and Sedgemoor this year, will be introduced across Mendip and South Somerset by April 2011 and will go county wide by rolling out across West Somerset by April 2012.

Steve Read, managing director of SWP, said: “Investing in new services is a rare thing in these challenging economic times and it’s a great tribute to all involved that we’re able to make this happen.

“SORT IT PLUS should see Somerset’s recycling rate rise to 60%, well above the national average of 38%.”
