£15m programme will improve roads and safety

The West Sussex Highways alliance has pulled together a task force to undertake an extensive programme of repairs to improve road surfaces and road safety following the severe winter weather.

Alliance teams repaired tens of thousands of potholes earlier this year, but more permanent repairs are now being carried out as part of a £15m investment programme.

The task force comprises West Sussex CC and May Gurney employees and a conference room at the Clapham Depot has been converted into a control centre. Bringing the team together in this way ensures a synchronised approach and optimum efficiency when delivering the extensive programme.

Richard Collins, general manager for May Gurney, said: “It makes sense to pool our resources to tackle the problem.

“The task force allows us to maximise efficiencies on this major operation and ensure that the programme flows seamlessly from one job to the next.”

Work has been programmed through to mid-summer, with more to follow.

The task force has also started work on the 2010 surface dressing programme. While surface dressing is carried out every year, this year the programme has been increased to seal in new repairs and protect against future winter weather damage.

Derek Whittington, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for strategic planning and transport, said: “Surface dressing is a very cost effective way to restore road surfaces. Traffic can also be allowed to run on the new surface almost immediately, avoiding lengthy closures and disruption.

“As well as extending the life expectancy of the road and delaying the need for more expensive repairs it also reduces the chances of potholes developing. Other benefits include an increase in skid resistance, which helps improve road safety.”
