May Gurney switches to green power

May Gurney has switched to a new electricity supply generated from 100% renewable sources.

Having already slashed carbon emissions by more than 15% in the past 12 months, May Gurney has further strengthened its commitment to going green by eliminating carbon from 83% of its electricity usage. The remaining 17% will be switched when contracts come up for renewal.

Dr Tom Macagno (pictured), May Gurney’s head of sustainability, said: “This is an important symbolic step to show we are aligning different parts of our business with our overall aims of reducing CO2. It is a little more expensive than a standard supply, but it shows we’re putting our money where our mouth is.

“We also hope that we’re showing that businesses can take these steps, and if more people switch to green electricity supplies then capacity will increase along with demand – eventually leading to cheaper renewable electricity.”

Staff awareness campaigns, eco-driving training, and smarter route planning have all contributed to the 15.1% reduction in CO2 emissions since April 2009.

Dr Macagno said maintaining the early success relies on a combination of changes in behaviour and making use of new technologies as they become available.

He also emphasised that staff support has been crucial, saying: “We have good support from staff at all levels, which will help overcome obstacles to the changes that must happen, especially as much depends on changes in human behaviour.

“The real challenge is to change people’s behaviours because that delivers permanent and sustainable benefits. And that’s what we’re aiming to do at May Gurney.”
