British Waterways' project will create leisure spot

May Gurney is about to undertake a project on behalf of British Waterways to turn an overgrown canal towpath in Wolverhampton into a year-round leisure spot.

A 1km stretch of the Old Main Line Canal is set for a £446,000 programme of improvements including two new access points, resurfacing and new planting.

Coir rolls will also be installed to encourage reeds to grow on the canalside and a radio operated pedestrian counter will record the number of people using the revamped canal.

The project will be carried out by British Waterways and May Gurney in partnership with All Saints and Blakenhall Community Development and should be completed in July.

Tony Harvey, British Waterways, said: “We hope that opening up these access points will encourage local people to get onto the towpath.

“We are enhancing the ecology and heritage of the canal and I hope neighbouring communities will seize this opportunity to find out more about their local waterway.”
