More opportunities for residents to reuse and recycle

North Yorkshire County Council’s Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) are about to get even better under a new management contract with May Gurney.

As of 1 April, May Gurney is operating 17 of the county’s 19 HWRCs with a firm commitment to increase recycling by collecting a wider range of materials and improving customer service.

Councillor Clare Wood, executive member for waste, is positive about the changes ahead. “Thanks to efforts of residents, our HWRCs are currently recycling and composting almost 70% of the waste they receive,” she said.

“This is already an excellent performance but by working with May Gurney to increase recycling opportunities on site, we aim to recycle, reuse or compost almost three-quarters of the waste that is received.

“I am delighted to welcome May Gurney to North Yorkshire and look forward to working with them over the next seven years to improve the services available to our residents.”

Over the coming months, visitors to the sites will find improved signage to make recycling even easier, and more opportunities to donate items such as furniture, books, CDs and other materials for reuse by charities and voluntary groups.

Sarah Chapman, regional operations director for May Gurney, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this prestigious contract and are very much looking forward to working with the council to further improve the service provided for North Yorkshire residents.”
