'Recycling revolution' off to a good start

May Gurney’s new waste and recycling contract with North Somerset Council is off to the best possible start, with early praise from the council’s head of streets and open spaces.

North Somerset Council expects to reduce the amount of waste it sends to landfill by 40% and save millions of pounds as a result of a ‘recycling revolution’ to be provided by May Gurney.

The contract, which went live on 1 March 2010, is valued at up to £85m over a potential 14-year period. The council says the move could save £15m in landfill costs over the contract's operational life by reducing biodegradable waste to landfill.

Speaking about the contract mobilisation, Ian Edser, head of streets and open spaces at North Somerset Council, said: “I would like to thank your team in respect of the effective start up of your contract with us. I understand that there was a very high level of activity prior to 1 March, which resulted in a positive start on the day.

“I have been impressed by your team and May Gurney’s commitment to the start up of the contract.

“Obviously we have a considerable amount more to do in order to introduce weekly recycling services later in the year, but you have clearly demonstrated that you have the commitment and capability to make this a real success.

“Thank you and I look forward to working with you on the next phase of the roll out.”
