May Gurney appointed for station upgrade

May Gurney has been appointed by Network Rail as main contractor for phase 1 of the £5m upgrade of Gourock station in Inverclyde, which will improve access for all users and facilities for commuters.

Gourock station is a terminus of the Inverclyde Line, located at Gourock pierhead and serving the town as well as the ferry services it was originally built for. The station was built to take large numbers of passengers boarding the steamers, but has been reduced in size for the smaller traffic volumes of today.

The work will be carried out in two phases. The first phase, with a value of £1.5m, began on 3 March and involves the construction of a new station building and train operating facility in the existing car park.

A new platform canopy will also be installed and the north wall refurbished to include glazed sections offering unobstructed sea views. Once the main station works are finished, the second phase of the project will see the demolition of redundant buildings and the renovation of platforms and the seawall.

Works also include the re-design of the station approach road and car park to maximise commuter parking and meet local bus and taxi requirements. The existing platform surfacing will be renewed and tactile paving installed to meet current Access For All (DDA) requirements.
