Redbridge Council scoops London Transport Award

Redbridge 'walked' away with the coveted award in the Walking and Public Realm category for its work on improving the pedestrian environment in Wanstead.
Part of the ‘Improving the walking environment in Wanstead’ scheme was achieved through a new idea called Key Walking Routes.
Key walking routes link important places like stations, schools and shops in the local area through high quality walking conditions to encourage people to walk and spend locally.
Various improvements were put in place to encourage usage of sustainable transport, including new street lighting on paths and in the High Street, which was installed by Cartledge.
Christ Church Park, opposite Wanstead High Street, has become a designated route to school because of new lighting and is now used for journeys to and from work.
Previously the park was poorly lit and not used as a commuter walking route during the winter months, but lighting the paths in the park resulted in an astounding 122% increase in walking across the park at night and a 75% increase during late afternoon and evenings.
Two historic water fountains were renovated and lit at each end of the High Street and have now become much-improved landmarks.

Footnote: Redbridge Council re-appointed Cartledge in 2007 at the end of an initial three-year contract. Cartledge works closely with Redbridge and lighting manufacturer Philips to install new lights utilising the Philips CosmoWhite 60 W lamp installed in a Philips Mini Milewide luminaire. This new generation of light provides a natural white light, which greatly enhances the environment and is around 30% more efficient than conventional solutions.
