New scheme turns old cooking oil into energy

The collection containers, which are designed to hold up to 1,250 litres of cooking oil, can be found at the household recycling centre in Oldbury.
May Gurney and Living Fuels operate a similar scheme on behalf of Norfolk County Council, at recycling centres across the county.
Councillor Mahboob Hussain, Sandwell Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for neighbourhoods and housing, said: “This new service is an excellent way of re-using a product that would have previously ended up being thrown away.
“Used cooking oil is often poured down the sink but this can block sewers and has a devastating effect of the local wildlife. The use of used cooking oil in electricity generation also reduces carbon emissions.”
