May Gurney kicks off work at Eastlands site

May Gurney spent part of one of the harshest winters on record carrying out investigation work across a site in Eastlands, Manchester using a variety of techniques.

The site is part of the Sport-city complex and is close to Manchester City’s football stadium. May Gurney has deployed most techniques on the varied project including the use of trial pits, cable percussion bored holes and rotary drilled holes.

The project team has used its plant fleet to install 30 holes, 10 of which were bored using cable rigs drilling to depths of between 12m and 18m. The remaining 20 were taken on to a greater depth by the rotary rigs.

Ben Armstrong, May Gurney site investigation manager, said: “The site is currently car parking and is split into three main areas.

“One of the biggest issues was the fact that we had to get mobilised and on site quickly. We were given very little notice to get the three cable percussion and four rotary drilling rigs, as well as the assorted excavators and smaller pieces of plant, to site.”

The team used a series of trial pits to locate and investigate the backfilling of buildings and that of the branch of an infilled canal that crossed it.
