Environmentally friendly road safety products

May Gurney’s fencing department is using two environmentally friendly products - ‘Nature rail’ and ‘Treefend’ – for road safety projects in Norfolk.

‘Nature rail’ (see pic), which comes from sustainably managed forests, is a permanent road safety barrier designed for use in forests and conservation areas.

Working under the Norfolk Strategic Partnership (Norfolk CC, May Gurney and Mott MacDonald), May Gurney has recently installed 150 metres of Nature rail along the A149 at Rollesby in Norfolk.

The posts were driven into the ground to minimise damage to tree roots and concrete was only used for the ground anchors at the end of each run.

‘Treefend’ is primarily used to protect trees and other structures from passing vehicles. However, May Gurney has also used the system to protect bridge parapets on Bickerstone Bridge at Barnham Broome, and to protect six recently installed safety cameras at various locations on the A149.
