Training Centre tops 800 training days in 2009

The Highway Electrical Training Centre at the head office of Cartledge, May Gurney’s specialist street lighting business, carried out more than 900 internal and external training days in 2009.

The centre, which is located near Chelmsford in Essex, offers a range of training courses leading to industry recognised qualifications.

The courses on offer cover diverse topics including abrasive wheels, cat & genny, manual handling, excavation, reinstatement, lorry mounted crane operations, working at height, and all NHSS (National Highway Sector Scheme) Sector 8 modules.

The centre is also a registered NVQ centre with LANTRA, and offers NVQs in Installing and Maintaining Highway Electrical Systems.

Last year the centre carried out 124 external candidate training days and 687 internal training days. External companies who use the centre include the London Boroughs of Havering, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets, Kingston upon Thames, and Brentwood Borough Council and Essex County Council.

The trainers are professionally qualified in adult education and approved by the HEA (Highways Electrical Academy). The centre also has full approval for its qualified assessors to train employees while they study for an NVQ in highway electrical systems, and offers a qualified portfolio authorising officer & compliance manager for assessing portfolios under the NVQ scheme.

Graham Cartledge, managing director of Cartledge, said: “Offering NVQs to our workforce is an excellent way for us to make sure our services are delivered by a highly trained workforce, while also helping our employees to develop their skills.”
