Good progress on CO2 reduction

A range of initiatives - from video conferencing to cycle to work schemes – has resulted in a very encouraging 11.8% reduction in CO2 emissions since April 2009.

This excellent start puts May Gurney nicely on course to achieve its ultimate targets - to reduce CO2 by 50% by 2012, and to be carbon neutral by 2014.

Ultimately, individual behaviour has the greatest impact on CO2 emissions, and with this in mind May Gurney is rolling out behaviour training across the group to encourage fuel/CO2 reductions.

All May Gurney employees will participate in the ‘SLIM UR CO2’ driver training. SLIM stands for ‘Speed, Litres, Idle-time and Miles’: changing driving behaviour in these four areas greatly reduces the amount of fuel used. Performance gains can range from 10% to 40%.

As part of the SLIM programme May Gurney employees are being trained to become trainers, an approach that will help embed SLIM across the company because participants will learn from their colleagues and workmates. This same approach has been used to dramatically improve May Gurney’s health and safety performance through the MAD (Making A Difference) programme.

Tom Macagno, head of sustainability at May Gurney, says: “ Above all the SLIM training makes the point that we are serious about CO2 reduction and need everyone’s help to meet our goals.”
