Highways scheme up for national award

The scheme, on Chapel Road/Marine Parade in Worthing, included safety improvements to roads, pavements and a parking area and street scene enhancement in a busy retail area.
Out of a possible 40 marks, the Considerate Constructors assessor awarded the scheme 36.5. In seven of the eight judging categories the scheme was awarded 4.5 out of five, and in the other category it was awarded a perfect five out of five. Given that a mark of four signifies ‘high level beyond compliance’, and five indicates ‘exceptional measures taken’, these results are extremely impressive.
The assessor picked out May Gurney’s ‘communication with retailers and residents’ for particular praise. Neil Russell, May Gurney’s scheme supervisor was particularly proactive in visiting everyone affected by the works, and a leaflet answering key questions proved very popular with local residents and other stakeholders.
