Big day for staff and pupils at Essex Primary School

The symbolic demolition of some of the old buildings at Felmore Primary School, Pitsea has paved the way for the final phase of the school’s redevelopment.

Working as a SMARTE EAST* partner, May Gurney is carrying out the project to create a new Primary School and extend and refurbish the Infants’ School.

Works already completed include a new two-storey extension and refurbishment of the existing Infants’ School buildings, construction of the new Junior School and demolition of the old buildings.

The final phase of the project, which can be carried out now the old buildings have been demolished, comprises re-modelling the car park and play areas, landscaping and creating a wildlife garden.

The first bricks of the old building were demolished by the head teacher, Karen Coleville, in front of around 200 pupils, teachers, school governors and representatives from Essex County Council.

Within five minutes the old staff room had been completely demolished – an emotional moment for some of the older staff members who have worked at the school for more than 25 years.

*Footnote: SMARTE EAST is a not for profit company jointly owned by Essex, Hertfordshire and Suffolk County Councils, which acts as an umbrella for regional framework contracts. It is the result of a ground breaking initiative by the authorities in collaboration with the Association of Chief Corporate Property Officers (COPROP) and the Regional Centre of Excellence East (RCE-East) who provided funding and ongoing support for the project.
