Good progress on North Lincs BSF schemes

A brand new sports hall being constructed by May Gurney at Brumby Engineering College, Scunthorpe is almost complete and the steel structure for the main new building is virtually erected.

The project is being carried out under the £91m North Lincolnshire Council Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, which got underway in June 2009.

The BSF project is being delivered by a new partnership called Engage North Lincolnshire, made up of North Lincolnshire Council, May Gurney, MASS Consultants, NPS Consultants and BSF investments, working together to transform the schools.

As well as carrying out the initial construction work, the partnership is responsible for maintaining the schools and their ICT facilities in the future.

Brumby Engineering College was the first BSF to get underway, and at that time Dr Tom Clark, principal, said: "It is a significant moment for us. It is great for our youngsters who have been given this wonderful opportunity and it is great for the town. The new building for science and technology will really take our engineering to a whole new level."

Meanwhile, work on a new building at Melior Community College is five months ahead of schedule after May Gurney deployed heaters and tents to battle through the icy blast in December and January.

Gary Reay, May Gurney's senior project manager, said: "We have taken measures to overcome the poor weather. The problem was not the snow but the sub-zero temperatures.

"Measures including encapsulating the substructures with temporary tents and introducing space heaters to maintain a constant temperature for concrete curing have been successfully introduced to mitigate the effects of the adverse weather."

Angela Briggs, headteacher of Melior Community College, said: "I am delighted the construction work is ahead of schedule. The latest news is the completion date is expected to be brought forward from September 2011 to May 2011."
