Northamptonshire highways teams get formal thanks

MGWSP highways teams in Northamptonshire have been formally thanked for their ‘excellent work’ in gritting the county’s roads during the severe winter weather.

Northamptonshire County Council bosses served teas and coffees to the dedicated workers who kept the county’s highways clear of snow and ice.

Council leader Cllr Jim Harker and Cllr Heather Smith, cabinet member for environment, growth and transport, both personally thanked the 110-strong workforce at a reception at Wellingborough Rugby Club.

David Farquhar, the council’s head of transport and highways, also offered his praise to the crews and all the staff behind the scenes who have worked around the clock to keep the county’s roads safe.

Cllr Smith said: “The crews have worked around the clock and done an excellent job of keeping the roads open.

“They worked over the Christmas and New Year period and after that the weather got even worse, meaning that they had to give up even more time and effort.

“When a team does such an excellent job it’s important that they receive the recognition they deserve.”

MGWSP’s teams have completed more than 50 gritting runs so far this winter and faced temperatures as low as -9C, as they spread more than 12,750 tonnes of gritting salt on the county network.

1,128 miles of road, 43% of the county’s total network, receives precautionary gritting on each run by the fleet of 27 lorries. The crews have also treated a considerable number of footpaths and secondary routes.
