Key milestone reached in North Lincs BSF project

Structural steelwork has commenced two weeks ahead of programme on the £18m Melior Community College project, which is part of the £91m North Lincs Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.

The complete reconstruction of Melior College, which focuses on business, enterprise and the arts, is the largest scheme in the North Lincs BSF programme. It is the first new secondary school to be built in the region for more than 50 years.

In spite of recent heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures the project team has ensured that this key milestone date has been achieved.

Measures the team has successfully deployed to mitigate the effects of the adverse weather include encapsulating the substructures with temporary tents and introducing space heaters to maintain a constant temperature for concrete curing.

The majority of the 650 tonne of structural steel in the scheme has been sourced locally from Corus in Scunthorpe, providing a much-needed boost to the local economy at a difficult time.

The project is now well placed to achieve future milestones.

Footnote: Under BSF, a consortium headed by May Gurney is also responsible for ensuring the schools and their ICT facilities are maintained in the future, in addition to carrying out the initial investment work.
