May Gurney calls for 'transparent' carbon system

May Gurney’s head of sustainability has called for a ‘transparent’ system for carbon accounting, to enable informed decision-making about transport schemes/initiatives.

Dr Tom Macagno made the remarks when speaking at the Road Summit 2010 conference in London last week (20-21 January).

Dr Macagno said: "For some while I've been thinking how useful it would be if there was a way of assessing transport schemes or initiatives in terms of their carbon emissions. Similar to energy ratings for everyday electrical appliances (see graphic).

"This would make government decisions transparent and help engage the public. The effect would be to make better decisions at the planning/design stage which achieve the biggest impact(s).

Footnote: May Gurney has announced plans to attempt to reduce its carbon emissions by 50% by 2012, and to become carbon neutral by 2014, based largely on changes to the way in which it uses its vehicle fleet.
