'Inspiring' youngsters get civic welcome

Outstanding young people from West Norfolk were invited to meet the mayor of the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk at a civic reception, to mark their achievements in the 2009 May Gurney Young People of the Year Awards.

The Young Person of the Year (YOPEY) awards were founded to counter the bad press young people receive due to the actions of an anti-social minority. They are given to positive role models who give to others.

Kurtis-Ross Green (16), of Dersingham, was the overall winner, while one of the runners-up, Kerrie Whiller (16), of Gaywood, also attended the reception. The junior Young Person of the Year for Norfolk and Suffolk, 10-year-old Tiffany Pearson, of Southery, was unable to attend.

Kurtis-Ross was nominated for his years of work helping to maintain the war memorial in Dersingham. Tiffany helps to care for her mother, who has cancer, and younger brother. Kerrie is a long-standing volunteer at The Club at Alderman Jackson School in Gaywood.

Andrew Slater, May Gurney’s marketing and communications director, who presented the awards at a ceremony in Norwich in November 2009, described the winners as “inspiring’.
