SORT IT PLUS features in CBI report

The SORT IT PLUS kerbside recycling service, delivered by May Gurney on behalf of the Somerset Waste Partnership, features in a new CBI report entitled ‘Public services that don’t cost the earth’.

The CBI says: “The UK has some of the toughest commitments to reducing greenhouse gases of any country. The government can use its role in commissioning public services to lead the way by working with its private sector partners to design more sustainable public services.

“Designing and delivering in partnership recommends government adopts a 'whole life-cost' approach to ensure the full cost of a service or product - over its lifetime - is accounted for. This includes environmental costs.

“Efficiency and sustainability go hand in hand; as all departments are faced with the need to do more for less in the current fiscal climate, sustainable public procurement has the power to drive lower cost services without compromising on quality. It's time for government to grasp this opportunity.”

SORT IT PLUS features in the CBI report as a good practice case study.

Under SORT IT PLUS, innovative new collection vehicles enable cardboard and plastic bottles to be added to the range of materials already included in kerbside recycling collections.

Following a successful pilot, SORT IT PLUS is currently being rolled out across two districts Somerset, with more set to follow suit. An assessment of the trial concluded that if implemented across the county, SORT IT PLUS would produce CO2 equivalent savings of 60,000 tonnes a year.

The CBI report describes May Gurney as “acutely aware of the need to constantly increase sustainability across all of its operations”.

It also states that May Gurney “works with clients in a range of public services to develop climate adaptation plans and align its operations with the public body’s own sustainability objectives”.
