Sustainable project officially opened

The Epping Forest Burial Park - nestled between the M11 and the town of North Weald Bassett in the remnants of the Royal Forest - is the first woodland burial park we’ve constructed for our customer Colney Wood Memorial Parks. Woodland burial parks are designed for people seeking an environmentally friendly funeral.

The project was successfully brought in on time, working to a tight 11-month schedule. The works comprised construction (including services) of four timber-clad buildings constructed from natural material supplied from sustainable resources. Heating is provided through a modern biomass boiler fired using timber chipped from trees within the forest.

Other works included a 700m access road, a 2.4km perimeter fence, a landscaped pond and 1000m woodland rides leading to burial plots.

Robert Russell, managing director building services, said: “We had to exercise extreme care when working within the tree canopy area. We used fenced exclusion zones to isolate construction activity, and hand digging around root structures ensured that the sensitive tree ecology remained largely untouched.”

The new burial park was officially opened by Kate Adie OBE on 9 May.
