Awards round up - November 2008
As well as the two wins for the High Level Bridge team and the Green Apple Awards double success (both reported elsewhere), we’ve achieved a highly commended and two further short listings. Here are the details:
A project carried out by Utility Services in Devon was ‘Highly Commended’ in the 2008 Pennon Group Environmental Awards.
This annual competition – organised by the parent company of South West Water - recognises environmentally sensitive projects.
When a burst occurred in the Tottiford 600mm potable water main under the River Bovey at Heathfield, near Newton Abbot, South West Water set us the challenging task of repairing this critical pipeline.
The work took place in an environmentally sensitive area where there is considerable risk of disturbing local wildlife and their habitats. The River Bovey is also a popular venue for coarse fishing, and we had to take extra measures to avoid contamination.
Considerate Contractors Scheme (East Sussex)
Working as part of East Sussex Highways, we’ve been named one of the most caring and cooperative contractors in East Sussex County Council's considerate contractors scheme.
The scheme – not to be confused with the national Considerate Constructors Scheme - was launched by the council two years ago to encourage contractors to be considerate of the needs of businesses, site personnel, visitors and the public. Inspectors visit sites across East Sussex and score them against a Code of Practice.
We picked up the Significant Improvement Award at the awards ceremony on 28 November.
Councillor Matthew Lock, lead member for transport and environment, said: "Digging up the roads to get to pipes and wires is something we have to put up with, but navigating noisy, dusty and badly signed roadworks sites can be really intimidating. These results show how effective the considerate contractors scheme has been in raising the standards of care and quality of road works in the county.”
National Railway Heritage Awards
We’ve been short-listed for the 2008 National Railway Heritage Awards for our work on the High Level Bridge between Newcastle and Gateshead.
The Awards are dedicated to encouraging and rewarding best practice in the restoration and continued upkeep of our rich heritage of railway and tramway buildings and structures.
We completed the highly complex £40m, seven-year schedule of repair works to the HLB earlier this year. The project has won an ICE Historic Bridges Award and a 2008 National Rail Award.
The National Railway Heritage Awards will be presented at the Merchant Taylors’ Hall in London on 3 December.
