Project completed in gateway town

We’ve recently completed a yearlong programme of works for National Grid to replace 5km of cast iron gas mains with polyethlene pipe in the picturesque town of Kendal in Cumbria.

The town, often described as the gateway to the Lake District, attracts many tourists all year round.

In order to minimise disruption to the public, businesses and local traders we maximised the use of no dig techniques such as slip lining, which eliminated the need for long trenches to be dug through the town centre. We also suspended works for six weeks over the busy Christmas 2007 period.

Detailed planning went into traffic management to keep disruption to a minimum. And work within the one-way system, where it was virtually impossible to implement traffic management, was completed during night hours.

Detailed monitoring and programming of the works ensured that the project was safely completed with a Zero AFR (Accident Frequency Rate).

The project was short-listed for the Customer Service Award at the prestigious 2008 Gas Industry Awards.
