Awards round up - September 2008

It’s been an excellent month on the awards front with a win in the 2008 National Rail Awards, a double win in the 2008 Green Apple Awards, and a double short listing in the upcoming AIM Awards.

National Rail Awards
In partnership with Network Rail and Mott MacDonald, we won the Civil Engineering Achievement of the Year category at the 2008 National Rail Awards ceremony on 18 September (pic above).

The award was for the structural refurbishment of the iconic High Level Bridge (HLB), a Network Rail 'Major Structure'.

The judges praised the project for its close teamwork and innovation and were particularly impressed by the ‘meticulous planning and execution which ensured that the rail services were never disrupted while the bridge was cloaked in 1,600 tonnes of scaffolding’.

John Wilkinson, managing director, Project and Rail Engineering Services, said: “These awards are widely recognised as the industry’s Oscars and this win is a tribute to the dedication, professionalism and commitment demonstrated by all those involved in this challenging project.”

Double Green Apple success
We’ve enjoyed double success in the 2008 Green Apple Awards.

These annual awards are organised by the Green Organisation, an independent environmental group dedicated to promoting the positive side of environmental endeavour.

We’ve been told that both the entries we made this year – for our Environment Champions campaign and for completing our first ‘waste neutral’ project – have been successful.

Environment Champions is our internal campaign to reduce the amount of waste we produce and power we consume. After impressive results in a trial at our group office in 2007, Environment Champions has been rolled out to all our principal offices across the country this year.

Our first waste neutral scheme was a highways improvement scheme at Heacham in Norfolk, which was carried out by the Norfolk Strategic Partnership (NSP) earlier this year. The ‘waste neutral’ concept was developed by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) to encourage the re-use on site of as much excavated material as possible.

We will be presented with the awards at a ceremony at the Houses of Parliament in Westminster during November.

AIM Awards double shortlisting
We’ve been short listed in two categories at the 2008 AIM Awards, which are for companies listed on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM).

We’ve been shortlisted in the ‘Best Communication’ category – and are also in the running for the most prestigious award, 'Company of the Year'.

The Company of the Year award is the ultimate accolade for any AIM company. The winner will have demonstrated to its new shareholders that it is a responsible, fully accountable, dynamic business with strong growth prospects and a commitment to AIM.

The AIM Awards will be presented at a ceremony in London on 16 October.
