'Excellent collaboration' on climate change adaptation

Our Utility Services business hosted a climate change adaptation and awareness workshop last month with National Grid.

The event – the latest in a series we are running in partnership with key customers from across our business sectors - brought together operational teams from National Grid and our gas, water and telecommunications divisions to discuss the implications of climate change for our business (and private) lives.

The workshop also looked at climate change from a risk management perspective - how we might manage risk by keeping options open to deliver benefits whatever the extent of climate change. Delegates were also encouraged to consider a series of 'adaptation strategies' to help alleviate or lessen the impact of climate change.

The day, which was a great success, included presentations by Dr Tom Macagno, head of sustainability at May Gurney, and Karen Jordan, head of UK climate change policy at National Grid.

Karen Jordan said: “The workshop was an excellent collaboration between National Grid and May Gurney. We explored some of the huge strategic issues around climate change but brought them back to real, relevant operational issues - which we all need to address now in order to work towards a low carbon future.”

Gavin Scarr Hall, managing director utility services, added: “Climate change is very high on our, and our customers’ agendas - particularly those in the energy and water sectors. We are pleased to use knowledge from across our business to build understanding and develop joint delivery plans.”
