Awards round up - May 2008

Our safety record received further recognition at the Water Industry Achievement Awards and RoSPA Health and Safety Award ceremonies – and we’ve made history in the Training Journal Awards.

We enjoyed success at the Water Industry Achievement Awards on 21 May. Having been short-listed in three categories, we won the Health & Safety Initiative Award for our MAD (Making A Difference) behavioural change programme.

MAD has played a big part in our success in driving down our accident frequency rate (AFR) from 0.5 in 2005 to 0.16 in March 2008 – making May Gurney one of the safest places to work in construction and engineering.

We were presented with our RoSPA Occupational Health & Safety Gold Award at a ceremony in Birmingham on 14 May.

This is the fourth consecutive year we’ve managed a RoSPA Gold Award – a remarkable achievement. The awards are not just about reducing accidents and ill health at work - they help ensure organisations have good health and safety management systems in place.

Mike Stott, SHE director, said: "Winning a RoSPA Gold Award for the fourth year in a row is a huge accolade that we can be very proud of. Not many companies achieve this - and even fewer construction companies reach these dizzy heights."

We’ve made history by becoming the first company to be short-listed for all three categories we’ve entered in the Training Journal Awards for Learning and Development.

The categories we’ve entered are: Best commercial training initiative; Best change management programme; and Training Journal’s learning and development professional of the year. The awards will be presented in London on 24 June.
