Hat trick of National Grid awards

Our Manchester-based gas team has made it a hat trick of Rowan Tree Environmental Awards from our key customer National Grid.

The monthly Rowan Tree Award, which is awarded for environmental good practice, is open to all National Grid contractors involved in construction projects and gas transmission and distribution works across the UK.

This time round we won the award for the re-use of excavated spoil on a project to divert a 200mm HP pipeline close to Darwen town centre in Lancashire.

The diversion runs through land previously occupied by a number of residential properties, which have been purchased by the local council to further develop the Darwen Academy. Following demolition of the properties it became clear that ground levels needed to be raised before works could continue.

After dialogue with the demolition contractors and the local council, it was agreed that our site team could store excavated material in an agreed location and re-use it as and when required during the works.

This solution delivered several benefits for the project including a reduction in spoil sent to landfill and associated costs savings, lowering the project’s carbon footprint by reducing transport requirements, and negating the need to import suitable fill material.

Under the rules of the awards, the Rowan Tree will be donated to a local school or community group. The photo shows one of the trees we won previously being planted at a school in Swinton, Manchester.
