Promotions and appointments
We have a new head of sustainability, a new role to enhance our services to local government – and we’ve further strengthened our Manchester-based gas team.
Stephen Sears, who headed up ECT Recycling prior to acquisition by May Gurney in June 2008, has been appointed to the wide-ranging role of director of policy and strategy, local government services.
In this new role, Stephen will continue to work closely with our Environmental Services business and add value to current and future support to our local government customers across the UK.
Ian Findlater, group business development director, said: “I believe this new role will add significantly to our momentum on delivering wider services for our customers, and Stephen’s depth of understanding of local government customers and processes will be an invaluable help.
"Stephen is also a social enterprise ambassador, a nationally recognised role, and this gives an added dimension to his involvement with our local authority customers.”

Dr Tom Macagno has been promoted to head of sustainability for the May Gurney Group.
Tom joined May Gurney in September 2007 to become our first sustainability manager. A native Californian, prior to coming to the UK Tom worked in product management.
In his new role Tom will develop our capacity and resources and help translate theory into working practice in all that we do.
Ian Findlater, group business development director, says: “May Gurney is increasingly being recognised as a sustainable enterprise, and part of this recognition is the result of Tom’s endeavours.
“This has been a significant differentiator for us, and our customers are encouraging us to make further progress in this area.”
Speaking about his new role, Tom said: “It’s a great opportunity to help May Gurney continue to develop its role as a leader in sustainability.”

Joanne Jones has been promoted to the newly created position of support services manager for our Gas Services business.
Joanne joined May Gurney in 2003 to provide IT support for the National Grid gas contract. She then took on responsibility for the programme of works for the gas business, ensuring compliance with NRSWA (New Roads and Street Works Act 1991). She also helped put together the successful bid for the current National Grid Term contract, which was awarded in 2005.
Prior to joining May Gurney, Joanne’s career included eight years with Balfour Beatty (working with National Grid) and 10 years with the University of Manchester.
In her new role Joanne will manage the day-to-day work activities of the support services team to ensure that targets are met, and develop and maintain relationships with National Grid – and ultimately improve customer and consumer satisfaction.
Joanne says: “I have a great team of people working with me and as their manager will encourage them to make the most of the opportunities to grow with May Gurney. Overall, the atmosphere, opportunities - and being part of a great team - make this a very good place to work.”
